Suffering from cystic fibrosis and rejecting the transplanted lungs he had gotten just two years ago, Jon Sacker, 33, came to UPMC in Pittsburgh from his hometown in Moore, Oklahoma, as a last resort. But when his carbon dioxide levels spiked, he became too sick to be immediately relisted for transplant. He was also too sick for ECMO. UPMC clinicians instead utilized ALung’s Hemolung RAS on an emergency use basis, making Mr. Sacker the first recipient of the technology in the United States.
