About the Hemolung RAS


The Hemolung RAS provides ultra low-flow, veno-venous extracorporeal carbon dioxide removal (ECCO2R) using a single, 15.5 French dual lumen catheter inserted percutaneously in the femoral or jugular vein.  Low-flow ECCO2R with the Hemolung RAS provides partial lung support independently of the lungs.  The Hemolung RAS removes 25% – 50% of basal metabolic CO2 production at circuit blood flows of 350-550 mL/min.  The Hemolung RAS is designed to minimize the complication risks associated with extracorporeal gas exchange therapy. 

Low-flow ECCO2R offers an alternative or supplement to invasive mechanical ventilation (MV) for patients suffering from acute hypercapnic respiratory failure.  In contrast to invasive MV, low-flow ECCO2R provides partial ventilatory support independently of the lungs.

The Hemolung RAS consists of three components:

  1. The Hemolung XG4 Cartridge
    • Integrated centrifugal pump and blood gas exchanger
    • Provided with pre-attached circuit tubing
    • 259 mL priming volume
    • 0.59 m2 fiber surface area
    • Polypropylene fibers with siloxane and heparin coatings
    • Single use disposable
    • Validated for 7 days of continuous use
  2. The Hemolung XG4 Catheter
    • Dual-lumen central venous catheter
    • 15.5 French wire reinforced
    • Enables bi-directional, veno-venous flow of blood from and back to the patient
    • Two configurations for either femoral or jugular insertion
    • Single use disposable
  3. The Hemolung CR4 Controller
    • The user interface system which operates and monitors all aspects of therapy
    • Provides blood flows from 350 – 550 mL/min by spinning the Cartridge
    • Provides vacuum driven sweep gas flow at 0 – 10 L/min
    • Sweep gas is either room air or 100% oxygen (wall source or tank)
    • Multiple use
